WARNING: Twitter Worm Spreading via Direct Messages

We have received multiple reports that a new, convincing, and dangerous worm and phishing scam is making the rounds on Twitter. Hacked accounts are sending DMs to users and stealing their login information. In fact, one of our own has received one of these direct messages.

Unsuspecting users are receiving DMs with the following text:

If you get this DM, DO NOT VISIT THE LINK. It takes you to a replica of the Twitter (Twitter

) login page where the hackers will steal your account and use it to send out more infected DMs to your friends.

If you’re one of the unlucky ones to be fooled by this worm, make sure you change your password. Also delete any tweets or DMs that have the link. If you can’t log into your account, reset the password and contact Twitter Support.

This is not the first worm to hit Twitter, but this one is especially dangerous because the login page is convincing and it is spreading via DMs from friends you trust.

When we have more information, we’ll update you with it.

Update: We contacted Twitter and they quickly got back to us. They are aware of the threat and are on the case.

From 1994-1995 I had the great pleasure of training with wrestling legend John Smith, 2-time gold medalist and 4-time world champion (domestic freestyle record of 80-0; international freestyle record of 100-5).

He was famous for his low leg attacks that made even  Olympic finals look like textbook demonstrations.

The problem was, of course, that I was in New Hampshire at boarding school and had never met John Smith. I only trained with him 45-60 minutes per night while I was lucid dreaming. I went on to have my best career season, which culminated with a more than 20-0 record before the national championships…

I’ve since used lucid dreaming to:

- Accelerate skill acquisition (example:  yabusame)
- Reactivate “forgotten” languages in less time
- Cultivate zen-like present-state awareness and decrease needless stress

Lucid Dreaming 101

I applied to Stanford University because I wanted to refine my clinical understanding of lucid dreaming: the ability to become conscious during dreams and affect their content.

This isn’t new-age nonsense, either. It’s been tested in the strictest of lab settings.

 Dr. Stephen LaBerge of Stanford was considered the world’s foremost researchers in the science and practice of lucid dreaming, and he had pioneered proving its existence. How? It turns out that eye movement, unlike the rest of the skeletal muscular system, is not inhibited by REM sleep. Subjects could memorize horizontal eye patterns (e.g. left-left-right-right-left-right-left) and repeat the patterns upon becoming lucid, which researchers could observe, all while recording brain activity with an  EEG to confirm that the subjects where, in fact, in a dream state. Tibetan monks have been practicing lucid dreaming for thousands of years, but it was considered fringe speculation until it was captured in a controlled environment.

There are now dozens of studies that explore the incredibly cool world of lucid dreaming and hint at applications (search “lucid dreaming” here on PubMed).

I recently had dinner with former PayPal employee Mark Goldenson, who was a researcher in both Stephen LaBerge’s lab and Phil Zimbardo’s psychophysiology lab at Stanford, and the conversation convinced me that sharing the basics was worth a post.

For those interested in experiencing lucid dreaming, here are a few simple training methods, including:

Step 1) Develop dream recall -

Have you ever thought that you didn’t dream on given nights, or perhaps not at all? If I were to track your REM sleep, as I have mine on even “dreamless” nights, you quickly realize that this isn’t the case. Undeveloped recall is to blame.

Put a pad of paper next to your bed and record your dream immediately upon waking. Immediately means immediately. If you get dressed first, or even stare at the ceiling for a minute, dream recollection will be nil. Expect that you might not get more than a few lines for the first week or so, but also expect to get to multi-page recall ability within 2-3 weeks. This alone will make you look forward to going to bed.

Step 2) Identify dream cues and/or do reality checks -

Some people, like Mark, can use their dream log to identify common dream elements that recur from night to night. Water seems to be particularly common. These elements are then used for “reality checks”: asking yourself if you’re dreaming when you see these cues during waking hours, and then testing.

Testing entails doing something like trying to fly (not recommended) or looking at your environment for clear indications of dream state. The latter is my preference, and I typically skip the dream log and default to a few simple tests at set action (every time I check the time or walk through a door, for example).

Since working memory can only hold around 7 +/- 2 bits of information, and you are constantly creating your dreamscape in real-time, there are a few things that change if you look away and then look back at them:

a. Text (e.g., written signs)
b. Digital clocks/watches. Fascinatingly, analog clocks appear to keep accurate dream time, which, in my case, also corresponds to real time passing.
c. Complex patterns

For the last category, I like to look at wall brickwork or floor patterns, look away, and look back to see if their orientation (e.g. horizontal vs. vertical) or tile/block size has changed, asking “am I dreaming?” If there are changes, guess what? You are either on some strong hallucinogens or you are dreaming. If you’re dreaming and answer in the affirmative, it is at this point that you will become lucid.

Step 3) Induce lucidity –

MILD

There are a number of techniques that help induce lucidity. One such technique tested by LaBerge, referred to as Mnemonic-Induction of Lucid Dreaming (MILD), involved — in my case — waking up in the middle of the night, setting the intention to lucid dream for 10-15 minutes, then going back to bed. I have found this to work best when I wake 5 hours or so after going to sleep (not just to bed). Here is a longer description from LaBerge’s FAQ.

Ancillary Drugs

Three drugs, in my experience, also seems to assist with induction: huperzine-A (200-400 mcg), melatonin (3 mg), and nicotine (standard patch). I don’t suggest combining them.

Huperzine-A is an acetyl-cholinesterase inhibitor, tested in Chinese clinical trials for  treating Alzheimer’s, and will increase the half-life of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the synapse. This is my preferred tool if I’m using chemical assistance. Melatonin is involved with setting circadian rhythm and its release is controlled by the pineal gland and suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Dreams on melatonin tend to be more colorful and more chaotic, as is also the case with nicotine. Nicotine is my last choice, as it is addictive and can cause total insomnia if you don’t time it properly. If you happen to be quitting smoking and will be using the patch regardless, be sure to put it on immediately prior to bed so the blood nicotine levels (and stimulant effects) peak well after you’ve fallen asleep. Mistime it and you’ll be one grumpy bastard the next morning.

Step 4) Extend lucidity duration

This is where things get a little strange, or even cooler.

The first few times you achieve lucidity, you will likely be so excited that you will wake yourself up. Two effective techniques for extending lucidity are spinning (a la a  piroutte in place) and looking at your hands. Both techniques, I believe, originated with  Carlos Castaneda, but LaBerge was the first to test them and quantify the effectiveness of spinning vs. hand rubbing:

…the odds in favor of continuing the lucid dream were about 22 to 1 after spinning, 13 to 1 after hand rubbing (another technique designed to prevent awakening), and 1 to 2 after “going with the flow” (a “control” task). That makes the relative odds favoring spinning over going with the flow 48 to 1, and for rubbing over going with the flow, 27 to 1.

Step 5) Once you’ve flown all over and had sex with every hottie you can think of…

Try to explore memory and performance. Indulge in the flying and sex binge, as all newbies do — no reason to rush that phase, of course — but then expand your carnal horizons in other directions.

The Indian government has obtained a leaked report that reveals the strategy of the country's Maoist insurgents.

The report is formulated by the group's top policy-making body, the politburo.

It calls for attacks on Indian security forces and efforts to stop multi-national corporations from taking over mines in central and eastern India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the insurgency is the single biggest threat to India's security. Maoist violence affects a third of all districts.

Last week, Mr Singh said India was losing the battle against the rebels.

The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of the poor. They operate in a large swathe of territory across central India, and in some areas have almost replaced the local government.

More than 6,000 people have been killed during their 20-year fight for a communist state.

'Bitter' fight

Calling upon Maoist cadres to mobilise and carry out "tactical" operations against India's security forces, the 20-page document says that Mr Singh's government is preparing to destroy their resistance.

Accusing the government of linking up with the "imperialist" United States, the Maoist report asks cadres to meticulously plan attacks against symbols of government and to "seize" political power.

Warning its cadres against becoming complacent, the politburo says that India is getting assistance from America and that it should learn from the failure of the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) in Sri Lanka.

It says the LTTE's failure to understand the changing tactics of the security forces eventually led to their defeat.

Maoists argue that big industrial houses, like India's Tata Group, are helped by the government in their attempts to wrest control of mines in eastern India.

The insurgents are calling upon the tribal population to participate in an armed struggle.

Maoist fighters are urged to tell local people that the Singh government wants to subdue them, destroy their culture and loot resources.

"This time the fight will be more long drawn and more bitter than the one against the British imperialist armies," the document says.

Bomb-making

Speaking at recent meetings on internal security India's Home Minister P Chidambaram said Maoists had improved their military and operational tactics.

Besides targeting the police, alleged police informers and so-called class enemies, the rebels are "laying greater emphasis on attacking economic and development infrastructure such as roads, bridges, railways, power and telecommunication networks," he said.

He also warned that the Maoists were making and deploying increasingly sophisticated bombs.

A senior official told the BBC that Mr Chidambaram has been trying to impress upon state governments that they should not take the threat posed by Maoists lightly.

He wants state governments to simplify procedures and increase the recruitment of security forces and use federal funds to buy weapons.

But, as a recent review by the home ministry showed, most states have been slow in understanding the seriousness of the situation.

When Pitchfork wrote that in the 1960s an incredible reggae scene began developing in Toronto it seemed "almost like the premise of some odd SCTV bit," it kind of exposed their ignorance of immigration in this country. But they meant well, so we forgive them. And they did go on to acknowledge how great the music that came out of that scene was.

Today, no SCTV quips -- just a celebration of the music that Jamaican immigrants to Toronto created back then. Right Right Time: The Summer Records Story is a special radio show about the guy who preserved some of that music, Jerry Brown, with his label Summer Records.

Right Right: The Summer Records Story is produced by someone who is an essential part of our own Radio 2 website team -- Ian Cauthery. (Multi talented -- a web guy, artist, writer, music aficionado.) Through today's show, Ian and host Shaun Dhani explore the rise (and fall) of Jerry Brown's studio out in Malton, Ont. (Yes, Pitchfork, admittedly that seems a slightly unlikely spot for great reggae.) The studio was visited by many reggae legends in its time, including Jackie Mittoo, Noel Ellis, Johnnie Osbourne, Stranger Cole, Leroy Sibbles, and Carl Dawkins.

Health Canada has apologized for sending more than two dozen body bags to a Manitoba First Nation in preparation for a possible swine flu outbreak.

"We regret the alarm that this incident has caused," said a statement issued late Thursday afternoon. "It is important to remember that our nurses are focused entirely on providing primary health-care services under often-trying circumstances."

But the apology only cites the bags sent to the Wasagamack First Nation. Manitoba First Nations chiefs said the bags — which arrived this week with a shipment of hand sanitizers and face masks — also arrived in God's River First Nation.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, Jim Wolfe, director of First Nations and Inuit Health for Manitoba, issued his own apology and took the blame.

He said his department regrets the alarm the shipment has caused in those communities, which were hard hit by the H1N1 flu virus in the spring. Wolfe said the apology goes out to all First Nations in the country, not just those who received the bags.

He said their remote geography was part of the reason he asked nursing stations in those communities to stock up for the winter.

Usually, shipments deliver enough supplies to nursing stations to last for six weeks, he said, adding that this time they shipped a lot more.

Wolfe also said up to 200 body bags were sent to isolated northern reserves. Wasagamack Chief Jerry Knott said his community's nursing station received about 30 of them.

"Given the unknown events that we may facing in the fall, we asked our nursing stations to stock up for three to four months. And unfortunately in this case we overestimated our requirements and that unfortunately caused the alarm we are seeing now," Wolfe said.

"Some of these communities are unreachable by road, water or air during the winter months. In other words, they wouldn't be able to bring these supplies into some of these communities, should they become necessary," Wolfe added.

However, most of the communities are accessible year-round by air in good weather.

Wolfe's apology isn't enough for some native leaders, who are calling for him to resign.

"We find Jim Wolfe has demonstrated incompetence in handling of the H1N1 pandemic in the MKO First Nations," said David Harper, Grand Chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), an organization that represents most First Nations communities in northern Manitoba.

Harper also said he is not satisfied with an apology from a bureaucrat and is demanding federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq deliver the apology personally.

"We will accept an apology only by the minister responsible for our well being," he said.

Canada's chief public health officer Dr. David Butler-Jones said Thursday the bags are among the routine materials normally sent to those communities by Health Canada. It's just regrettable they showed up with the flu kits, he said.

"Really, body bags in this context are not necessarily related to the pandemic. Body bags may be part of the supplies of different nursing stations normally," said Butler-Jones, who is in Winnipeg for meetings with Canada's provincial and federal health ministers.

"But for this pandemic, normal supplies should be more than enough because we are not seeing a drastic increase in mortality. It really is unfortunate that these were seen as coming together."

Although officials do not expect a lot of deaths, it's important to plan for the worst-case scenario in a potential flu pandemic, said Butler-Jones, who once had an undertaker as part of a pandemic planning committee.

"We were even looking at where would a temporary morgue be: Would you take the skating rink?" he said.

Manitoba First Nations chiefs said the bags have sent a chilling message to First Nations communities.

"It's frightening our people. It's frightening me as leader. It's frightening me as a grandfather, father, and that's not what we want," said Grand Chief Ron Evans. "[Health Canada officials] have to understand that. We care for our people, love our families, children, grandchildren, and we want to make sure when a pandemic hits, there's medicine for them and people to look after them.

"That's all we want. That's all we're asking for."

Other First Nations leaders said the shipment leaves them feeling rejected by the federal government.

"Is the body bags a statement from Canada that we as First Nations are on our own?" Knott asked.

He flew to Winnipeg with the bags on Wednesday and took them to the Health Canada building on York Avenue.

The office was closed at the time, so he stacked the bags on the doorstep and marked them "Return to Sender."
